New Haven traveled to Providence Saturday and came away with the victory against upstarts Rhode Island Rebellion.
The energy level in this nighttime game was high throughout; at stake was the last playoff spot in the competition, and neither team aimed to give quarter. Though a new team, the Rebellion gave the Warriors all they could handle in their earlier meeting in New Haven. Rhode Island promised to be a changed team for the rematch, and indeed they were.
But the Warriors also showed up a changed team. The experience of the season has produced a more cohesive side with a more aggressive defense, patient attack and more disciplined handling. The result was an early lead at the half which Rhode Island couldn’t overcome. Despite a two-try Rebellion surge in the final minutes, New Haven maintained overall control, capping the game with a spectacular interception try on the wing from Karl Buck. In the end it was the Warriors were celebrating under the lights in Providence, assured of a playoff berth.
Hats off to the Rhode Island organization. They’ve got loads of talent and motivation, and are surely developing into a force to be reckoned with in the coming seasons.
New Haven has one more home game left (see the facebook invite for details). Playoff details will be announced soon.
