The Warriors are coming off a pair losses from a two-game run against neighborhood rivals, the Rhode Island Rebellion. Game 3: Rhode Island 78, New Haven 8 The first game was played at New Haven in sweltering heat and seemed to quickly get out of hand for the Warriors, with the Rebellion scoring a half-dozen tries in the first forty. The Warriors continued to struggle defensively in the second half, and the boys from Rhode Island continued to take advantage, maintaining possession and consistently churning out tries. Even while stuck on defense and short on interchange, a couple of scores from New Haven at least got them on the board. Ultimately the final settled at a lopsided 8-78. Man of the Match for New Haven was Brian Lee. This past weekend, New Haven traveled up to Providence for the rematch, this time on Rhode Island’s turf, looking to avenge the prior week’s scoreline. The second game started off quite differently than the first. Early pressure by New Haven seemed to force some mistakes by Rhode Island, providing opportunities for attack. Both teams traded tries in the first half. Bolstered by solid kicking by Chris Yergan, the Warriors went in to half time with a slim lead. But adjustments by the Rebellion proved fruitful out of the gate, with Rhode Island leveraging their speed to get some quick scores in the 3rd quarter. The momentum shift proved too much to overcome for New Haven, but the general opinion of those who were there was that the game was closer than the score might indicate. Final 24-54; Man of the Match for New Haven (for the second week in a row) was Brian Lee, playing in the halves. Boston was able to take advantage of some defensive miscues by the Warriors and built up a lead early in the first forty. New Haven was able to respond at first, but couldn’t manage to apply consistent pressure. In spite of the loss, highlights for New Haven included solid play from new players — including a pair of tries from rookie forward Josh Patterson — as well as improved communication between players working outside of their usual positions. For a side in the midst of rebuilding, extra reps for less experienced players may pay dividends later in the season, when team depth can help offset injury losses. The Warriors now turn their attention toward preparing for a visit from the Rhode Island Rebellion next Saturday (6/16). Stay tuned for confirmation on location and match start time.
